| Red Rock Canyon |
Located 25 miles north of Mojave on Highway 14, Red Rock Canyon State Park is a beautiful area with unusual cliffs, rock formations, and mineral deposits. It is located in a canyon between the Sierras and the El Paso mountains. The elevation is 2,600 feet. Open year-round.
Computer-scanned pictures -- especially low-resolution internet pictures -- don't do justice to this incredibly beautiful place. It's a desert canyon with many different faces and colors, and a mood that changes with the time of day. Photogs, load your cameras, and bring plenty of film; you'll use lots of it of it here.
Campsites, facilities: 50 sites for tents or motor homes up to 30 feet long. Piped water, fire grills and picnic tables are provided. Pit toilets, a dump station, exhibits and a nature trail are available. Two campgrounds are wheelchair accessible. Pets are permitted on leashes. Reservations are not required. Fees are $10-$12 fee per night; $1 pet fee.
Nearby are both Jawbone and Last Chance Canyons, and the El Paso Mountains, which are all great areas for hiking, 4-wheeling, rockhounding, and off-roading.
