Judging and Points
(from the ARCA 1999 Program)

Phoenix [ Rules | Marshal | Judge | Vehicle ]

A. Stopping - One (1) Point

One (1) stop point is issued when the vehicle has stopped forward progress for 6 seconds. This time is counted out loud by the Judge as, "One thousand one, one thousand two…" and so on until he reaches the count of six (6). At that time, one (1) point is issued. Competitors may then sit as long as they like without receiving more points for stopping. (Unless they time out.) Once any forward progress is made, the cycle starts over. (Same for reverse/backing.)

B. Backing - One (1) Point

One (1) point is issued when the vehicle is purposely reversed. This may be done by shifting the vehicle into reverse and driving, clutching and rolling backward, or putting the vehicle in neutral and rolling backward. Any deliberate reversal is one (1) point. Further, the vehicle is assessed one (1) additional point for stopping, as it is necessary to stop forward progress in order to back up. Backing then, is one (1) point for stopping and one (1) point for backing up, for a total of two (2) points.

C. Knocking Down a Gate - Ten (10) Points

Ten (10) points will be issued only if a gate actually falls down. The vehicle must be responsible for the gate being knocked down. Winch cables are considered part of the vehicle. If a gate is run into and does not fall over, no points are given.

D. Winching - Forty (40) Points / Twenty (20) Points

Winch tokens will be issued at sign up by ARCA Officials. A competitor may use these tokens on any obstacle in any course and Twenty (20) points will be issued per use. If all tokens are used and winching is needed, Forty (40) points will be issued. Unused tokens may be returned to the Final Judge for a Ten (10) point reduction, per token, of the competitor's Final Score. Winching is counted as soon as the winch is "loaded" or has tension on the cable. Every "re-hook" is penalized Twenty (20) points and is considered a new "winch."

E. Recovery Tools - Twenty (20) Points

Twenty (20) points will be issued if the competitor uses a jack, tire, or other "tool" carried in the vehicle, to help complete a section. This includes throwing spare tires in holes, etc. Rocks may be used, but must be removed by the competing team and put back where they were found before moving on to the next section. Judge will not return scorecard until rocks are returned to their original location.

F. Pointing Out - Forty (40) Points

Forty (40) points are the maximum amount that can be given if a driver has attempted an obstacle. Keep an eye on the points as they accrue. Once the team has accumulated Forty (40) points, they have pointed out. They must then clear the obstacle for the next competitor. The scorecard total for that section should be marked with Forty (40) points. The attempt must be actual. Just passing the start gate then backing or driving away does not constitute an attempt.

G. Bypassing - Fifty (50) Points

If a competitor chooses to bypass an obstacle or does not show up, they are penalized Fifty (50) points on the Judge's scorecard.

H. Timing

Timing begins when the foremost part of the vehicle, spotter, or driver passes the "Start" gate. It ends when the foremost part of the vehicle passes the end/finish gate.

I. Breaking Down

A team has 45 minutes of cumulative breakdown time per day. If a breakdown occurs the competitor may use his time left on the obstacle to begin repairs without this time going against the 45 minute allotted breakdown time. Once timed out, the competitor must advise the Judge that he is broken (must be done immediately). The Judge will mark the competitor's scorecard with the time of day and sign it. When the repair is completed the competitor must tell the Judge of the fix. The Judge will then mark down the time, sign it, and mark down the number of the vehicle the competitor is now following.

When the competitor comes to the next obstacle the Judge will have marked his (the Judge's) scorecard with a bypass mark of Fifty (50) points. The competitor must then show the Judge his scorecard with the previous Judge's signature and a total breakdown time of less than 45 minutes. The Judge will then note that the competitor is following the person as written on the scorecard and allow him to go thru. Each Judge will follow this procedure.

Over the breakdown time any vehicles out of order and without signatures will result in disqualification for the day and all further sections will receive the bypass score of Fifty (50) points.
